Getting stuck in for Raetihi & Ruapehu

Our Mission & Vision

The compass that guides every grubby hand, every project, every connection we make

Our Mission

To build stronger, more connected communities across the Ruapehu District by bringing people together through hands-on projects, practical skill-sharing, and meaningful mahi that benefits everyone.

We believe real change doesn't happen in boardrooms or through endless reports—it happens when neighbors roll up their sleeves and get stuck in together. From transforming neglected spaces into thriving community gardens to teaching young people practical skills, from fixing things that deserve a second life to restoring our beautiful natural environment, we're all about action that makes a tangible difference.

Our Vision

A thriving Ruapehu District where every person feels connected, valued, and empowered to contribute—where getting your hands dirty for your community is celebrated, not exceptional.

We dream of neighborhoods where kids grow up knowing how to grow kai, fix things, and work together. Where empty lots become gathering places filled with life. Where young people see themselves as leaders and change-makers right now, not just in the future. Where waste is seen as a resource, and skills are shared freely between generations. Where the phrase "someone should do something about that" turns into "let's grab some mates and sort it ourselves."

Our Core Values

These principles shape everything we do—from the projects we choose to how we treat each other

Manaakitanga - Caring for Each Other

We show up for our community with generosity, respect, and genuine care. Whether someone's here for their first working bee or their hundredth, everyone is welcomed and valued. We look after our volunteers, celebrate their contributions, and make sure nobody feels like just a number. Manaakitanga means we care about the people, not just the projects.

Kaitiakitanga - Guardianship

We're caretakers of our environment and resources for future generations. Every decision considers the long-term impact. We choose sustainability over convenience, repair over replacement, and native restoration over quick fixes. Our beautiful Ruapehu landscape isn't ours to exploit—it's ours to protect and pass on in better shape than we found it.

Whānaungatanga - Building Relationships

Strong communities are built on strong relationships. We create spaces where genuine connections form—where the retired engineer mentors the curious teenager, where the solo parent finds support, where the newcomer becomes part of the whānau. Our projects succeed because of the relationships they build, not just the tasks they complete.

Action Over Talk

We believe in doing, not just discussing. While others write reports and wait for permission, we're grabbing spades and making things happen. We'd rather build one garden than plan ten. This doesn't mean we're reckless—it means we're committed to practical solutions that create immediate, visible change.

Inclusivity & Accessibility

Our door is open to everyone, regardless of age, background, ability, or experience. We design projects so anyone can participate—whether you're 8 or 80, fit as a fiddle or managing limitations. No experience required, no judgment given. If you're willing to have a go, you belong here.

Innovation & Creativity

The best solutions often come from thinking differently. We encourage creative problem-solving, embrace new ideas, and celebrate the unconventional. If someone suggests turning old tyres into garden planters or hosting a silent disco working bee, our response is "why not?" Innovation thrives when people feel free to experiment.

Our Impact Goals

We measure success by the connections we build and the change we create

01

Community Connection

Reduce social isolation by creating welcoming spaces where people of all ages and backgrounds work, learn, and celebrate together.

02

Environmental Health

Restore native habitats, reduce waste to landfill, and inspire sustainable practices that protect our beautiful Ruapehu environment.

03

Skill Development

Share practical knowledge across generations so our community becomes more self-reliant, capable, and confident.

04

Youth Empowerment

Support rangatahi to discover their strengths, develop leadership skills, and see themselves as valuable contributors to their community.

Be Part of the Mission

Our mission becomes reality through the mahi of everyday people who choose to show up. Whether you've got an hour or a lifetime to give—you can help shape the Ruapehu we want to see.
